The auto manufacturers have the idea we should give them a bunch of billions of dollars to keep them solvent until they can reorganize their royally screwed up finances. Who's to say they can or will?
I'd rather the US give the manufacturers X thousand dollars for every vehicle they sell to a U.S. citizen in, say, 2009-2010. So the production will resume, workers will keep their jobs, and we'll see just how clever management really is, or isn't.

Bill,
That's a great idea! I priced a new F-150 super crew this morning several hunderd over $47,000.00 it Obama would take care of the $47,000.00 I could handle the payments on the balance, I think, I mean if the rate is low and fixed. Well maybe.

Do you think if I fly my jet to Detroit, they will give me a 0% loan for 50 years for an SUV (after all, gas prices are going down!).
Mr. Bill and Miss Paula --
I've never seen the arrogance that these guys have displayed. Rather than hang their heads in shame for the mess they've caused....and they HAVE caused it all by themselves....they somehow think the we're the cause, and that's why we ought to pay a multi-billion dollar fine.
I hope both of you get your new, free vehicles. A big F-150 for Mr. Bill and the most luxurous SUV for Miss Paula.
Bill C, I thought that the problems we now face in Detroit grew out of the Big 3's inability to face down that communist Walter Reuther. They could more easily compete if they didn't have those "legacy" costs that need to be "paid" by every car they make.
