Luxury Hotels Lose The Bible

"We've seen a lot of hotel trends over the years, plasma TVs, the rise of free wi-fi, pillow butlers, in-room fitness equipment and all sorts of adjustments as hotels adapt to the greening of America but the latest might just be the disappearance of an old favorite. ABC News has a story on the fact that luxury hotels are ditching the tradition of the Bible tucked in the bedside drawer. According to the American Hotel and Lodging Association, the number of luxury hotels that stock the Bible and other religious items has dropped 18 percent since 2001. Luxury chains taking part in the trend include Kimpton Hotels, the Borgata in Atlantic City and the Gansevoort Hotel Group. The hotels all offer various religious materials that are available by request.

"This trend is on the luxury side. In other motels, hotels and inns, the number of in-room Bibles has increased from 79 percent in 1988 to 95 percent today. In fact, a survey from the American Hotel and Lodging Association reveals that the more you pay for a hotel room the less likely you are to see a Bible. A full 99 percent of economy hotels have a Bible in the room but just 73 percent of luxury hotels provide one. Also Bibles are least likely to be found in urban hotels and resorts and are most often at hotels near interstate highways or at airports."

I won't be staying in these hotels.  The Bibles, as you know, cost these hotels nothing.  They are provided by the Gideons and have been for nearly a century.

That is very sad.  Here in Austin we are getting a lot of luxury hotels.  Hopefully they put the bible in their hotels.

Bill, it is a sad state of affairs when they don't put the Bible in the nightstand, like you mentioned they are free and take up so little room!

Maybe when we call for reservations, we should ask ahead of time what the hotel's policy is.  Even some of the lower priced establishments are following this trend.

I was made aware of this story by Glenn Beck. He also said that championing this effort was the Marriott chain which the family is very big in the Mormon church. Seems some values are flexible when it comes to increasing the bottom line. I appreciate your stance on this subject.

This is definitely interesting. I can see their point of wanting to be more "politically correct."

Interesting. Perhaps the "luxury" folks figure if their guests can afford luxury, they don't need any helpfrom "above." It does really show where the heart is!

Gary, Danielle, Frank, Penny, Tony and Darcy, and Jeff --

Thanks so much for your thougnts.

When I was a little boy my daddy would take me on Saturday to Mr. , the barber.  The next day was church and Sunday school.  Often Mr. Welch would say, "You're going to look nice at church tomorrow.  I'm going to be playing golf."

Then Mr. Welch had a heart attack.  Just about killed him.  He joined the church, was there every Sunday thereafter, even ushered.  He lived a long time before he had another heart attack.

When you start thinking you don't need God in your life, often times He shows you otherwise.  "Politically correct" is an oxymoron in a democracy when "correct" is not the will of the majority.

GOD Blesses!

Now that makes no sense at all...what is the point in trying to alienate the public? If thay don't cost? I would bet that even those who don't read them don't care if they are there...Ridiculous!

And I agree... if it matters to you..ask and if they don't have one, don't stay there!(obviously money talks)

Bill, I'm with you. I was on a business trip with an associate when we found out his niece passed away suddenly and unexpectedly back home. We opened the good book and I am not an overtly religious man. Today, would these hotel magnates want us to rent porn instead?

Bill,
I don't know their reasoning behind removing the bibles, however I surmise it's likely similar to why they did away with the Lord's Prayer in schools...... other religions may find it discriminatory.

I always felt comforted to see the familiar book in the little bedside table drawer....all of the secrets of the universe and life are to be found in the bible, in one form or another.

Interesting to say the least. For some folks that have been depressed in a hotel room with their life hanging in the balance, I have heard that access to the Gideon has save lives.
