Just before we had a new high efficiency air conditioning system installed to replace the old one, I bought a window unit for our bedroom.
I figured that way, as long as we had power, we'd at least have one room to hibernate in when the big system was down. Afte rall, you can't see the thing from the street since the master bedroom is on the back side of the house.
Well, we discovered something interesting.
We can turn the central unit off entirely before we go to bed, fire up the window unit, then close the bedroom door. The house stays cool enough throughout the night and morning to keep us from having to turn the central unit back on until after lunch.
This savings has been dramatic. I pass it on to you for your consideration.

Hi Bill, You are so right about this. We could save lots of energy and money if all of us did this. Why cool a big house when you are not in the rooms to enjoy it?
Hi Bill Good tip I could have a window unit here to as the bedroom faces back I will talk to the "boss" about this great idea
Bill,
Great idea. I see them advertsed in the paper all the time. I think it could pay for itself in one or two months.
We changed out our central air system 3 years ago, had the attic reinsulated and, when we had the house reroofed, used the radient barrier decking.
The insurance company paid for the roof. The rest we paid for. The savings in utilities paid for all of it in slightly less than 2 years.
The window unit is 12,000 btus and I bought it at Lowes for about 200 bucks. It runs on 110 and is built to continue to run during most brown outs.
I'm telling you, I know for sure that this is the way to go. When I got up at 6 this morning, I turned the window unit off. It's now 10:30 and there has been no a/c running in the house for 4.5 hours, and I know there won't he until after lunch. So that means 1/4 of every 24 hr period, no a/c runs.
Excellent idea, Bill! And the newer window units are much more efficient than they used to be.
