BILL CHERRY'S GREATEST DALLAS PARK CITIES REAL ESTATE BLOG: GLENDA, THE RED HEADED GIRLFRIEND, AND THE '61 JET BLACK 'VETTE

GLENDA, THE RED HEADED GIRLFRIEND, AND THE '61 JET BLACK 'VETTE

<< Chuck Dunnaway, Famous '60s Radio Personality

That's my friend Chuck Dunnaway.  Many of you know him because he was one of the most famous disc jockeys of all times, working in major markets all over the US, until he and his wife, Kendall, bought their own station, built it to icon status, sold it, became better than well-fixed, then retired and moved to the Houston area.

Chuck sent me an interesting web site called "Take Me Back to the Sixties."  While fun music is playing, it points out the way things were back then.  One of them shows that you could have bought a new Chevy Impala for less than $3,000.

It reminded me of the time when Glenda was my girlfriend in college.  I had a swell-looking new MG, and I thought we looked just great in it -- Glenda with her red hair, me with my self-satisfied goofy grin and all.

But Glenda insisted we'd look a lot better if we were in a new jet black 'vette.

By then I had learned not to argue with Glenda, and I couldn't seem to get her mind off of the prospect of our looking much better in a jet black 'vette.  So one afternoon after classes, we got in the MG and headed off to the Chevy dealer in Ft. Worth.

They wanted $3,500 for that black 'vette.  I just couldn't see it, so I told Glenda we were going to have to continue looking like nouveau-Ma and Paw Kettle in the baby blue MG.  Glenda said, "OK," and that was that.  She never brought it up again.  What a surprise!  She must have really loved me after all.

So here's Chuck's fun web site.  See how things use to be. (Meanwhile, what do they want for a 'vette today?  Better yet, what do they want for a restored '61 jet black 'vette today?)  OK, here's the site:

And here are Chuck and Kendall Dunnaway today.

Marcus, Glenda lives in Florida with her husband, Steve, and their noisy, nervous little dog.  I'll tell her you asked about her.

Bill...you sound like you had quite the adolecence! The fact that you are still in touch with all of those friends form the past says a lot about you! reunion Here are some of the gang from my HS reunion over the weekend! It was our 45th!.....19 showed. A good turnout from a class of 30. Many of us were in school together since 4th grade!

Oh, Joan!  That's fabulous!  I do keep up with people all over everywhere that I have known in one of my past lives.  I'm sure you know that you have to make the effort yourself if you're interested in them.

I'm just always interested in one question: "How did things turn out for you?"  And making one comment:  "If things aren't going OK, what can I do to make it better?"

So when people want to know whatever happened to So in So (even the newspaper editors/reporters), I'm the one who is supposed to know.  It never occurs to anyone that some of those people I not only never knew but never heard of!

Bill, I read this post of yours last night, however was too out of it on allergy pills (ragweed and hayfever season here in SO) to be able to coherently comment. A very enjoyable read.  A bay-blue MG sounds very nice. Yesterday I saw a baby-blue plymouth, from the 40s I believe. That's one of my favourite colours....somehow I can't picture any of today's vehicles sporting it though.

Joan, lovely picture ! It's so nice that you and Bill keep in touch with all of these people.

Jo, are you better today?  I guess because we've had so much rain this spring and summer, allergies don't seem to have been as bad here in Dallas as usual.  Plymouth had some pretty good body styles in the old days.  And now Plymouth doesn't even exist any more.

Bill, thanks for asking. Not much better , no. However I plod on ahead with my day and hope to be in the moment as much as possible . We've had a very dry summer and spring here. The grass is yellow in many places plus the humidity and breezes make for a bad allergy season.

I read more of your book last night. Your ways of telling a story are amazing....the feelings somehow hop off the page and enter the reader as though he/she were a part of the story. I really loved the story about George and Mary and how her love and belief in him and their serendipitous meeting at his first sorority dance in '59, transformed him .....I better stop here in case someone reading my comment ends up reading your book...I don't want to spoil the story for them.  ((-:

The Plymouth I saw yesterday had beautiful lines...rounded and bulky yet still looked elegant and classy.

I'm glad you liked the story of George and Mary.  I still keep up with them.  And I'll guarantee you if you were driving a Lexus and that Plymouth were to hit you, your Lexus would be a mess.  That Plymouth, with a minor scratch or two,  would be ready to have the next wreck.
